The Saint Lucia Fire Service closed-out the finals in one game to become debut champions of the South Coast Basketball League.
High winds on December 20th made long distance shooting difficult on the night of the finals rendering the accomplished 3-point shooters on both teams ineffective. Not one 3-point field goal was scored on the night, conditions which did little to stop the Saint Lucia Fire Service who pounded the ball on the inside to their superstar, Marcian Calderon.
Calderon scored 5 consecutive field goals between the 1st and 2nd periods to push the Fire Service ahead, part of a 14-2 run that gave them the lead, 35-30, by the end of the first half.
Jerry Charles, Owen Cazaubon and Glenn Antoine took over the scoring in the 3rd quarter, the three combining for 21 of the Fire Services 22 points in the period. Ultimately, the 40 points scored by the three veterans, plus a double double 28 points and 22 rebounds by Calderon, was too much firepower for the Run ‘N Gun All-stars to overcome.
Full court pressure to start the 4th quarter would help the Run ‘N Gun All-stars close within 3 points of the lead, 66-63. Zephtan Fontelio (23 points) and Kelcent Fulgence (17 points) were active, scoring 9 and 8 points respectively in the period. But the pressure defense would do little to stop the Fire Service big man, once he received the ball close to the paint. Calderon would score all but 4 of the Fire Service 19 points in the final period to eliminate the Run ‘N Gun All-stars.
