In the night’s first encounter Morne Gladiators bt Gros Islet Door Deals 50 – 43 in a close and low scoring affair The Domino’s Player of the Game was Alverez Henry with his influential 9 Points and 3 Steals, off the bench. Benny Hippolyte for the Gladiators also had a strong game on the boards with 10 Rebounds and 5 points

For Gros Islet: Crade Jean was two points shy of a double double with 8 points and 11 rebounds. And Captain Rawlstan Mitchel recorded 10 points, 3 rebounds and 4 steals before fouling out.

GAME 2 8:00pm (Beausejour Indoor Facility)
Two Time defending champions Courts Jets put on a basketball clinic in their pursuit to three peat with an impressive 86 – 42 victory over the young energetic BBC team from Vieux Fort. With scores close in the first quarter, they pulled away in the second quarter and never looked back.

The Monster player of the game was Ron DuMurville who had a staggering 14/19 (74%) shooting for his 29 points and 5 rebounds. Also from Courts Jets, Andre Louison chipped in with 14 points and 3 rebounds.

For BBC, Kurt Raphael had a good outing in a losing effort with 14 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Givan Jones also contributed with 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Sunday March 11th, 2012
GAME 3: Vieux Fort Playing Facility (6:00pm)

Dennery bt Southern Warriors 52 – 40 with a spirited fight back in the second half after being down by three to go into the halftime interval.

For Dennery: Jermain Joseph led the way with 11 points and 5 rebounds. And Kevin Mathurin contributed with 9 points and 12 rebounds. For the Southern Warriors, Anthony Joseph shot 7/15 for his 18 points and grabbed 6 Rebounds.

The Bank of St. Lucia Player of the Game was Jermain Joseph with his 11 points and 5 Rebounds

Game 4: Vigie Sports Complex (6:00pm)
Babonneau Dynasty pulled away in the fourth quarter in a keenly contested affair to beat Canaries Moon River 58 – 46. Close through the first three quarters, 22 points was scored by Babonneau in the fourth to commandingly take control of the game and seal their first victory in the tournament.

For Babonneau: Leonard Emmanuel had an all-round game with 17 points, 6 Rebounds and 7 Steals. But the Bank of St. Lucia Player of the Game was Owen Cazabon with his double double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists to steer Babonneau to victory.

Larry Shepard also had a double double with 10 points and 12 boards for Canaries Moon River in their loss.

Game 5: at the Vigie Sports Complex (8:00pm)
The Game of the night featured newcomers Micoud Hustlerz squaring up against 2009 finalists VBCC Warlords.
It proved too tough a test for the newcomers who showed great fight and spirit till the end but VBCC showed their class to emerge with a 77 – 43 victory.

For VBCC: Philbert Lubrin shot 6/8 (75%) for his 12 points, 12 rebounds and 6 steals. And Marcian Calderon also added a game high 17 points and 12 rebounds to help the VBCC team.

For Micoud Hustlerz: Angus Charlery had a double double in a loss with his 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Domino’s Player of the Game was Philbert Lubrin with his double double of 12 points and 12 rebounds and his impressive shooting average.

Our ladies from Vieux Fort, YOLO Heats, did quite well in their first match tying with Shamrock (Castries) in the 4th quarter after trailing for most of regulation time. Match ended in a tie 25-25.

YOLO Heats will play at the Vieux Fort multipurpose court on Saturday, March 10th versus the National U16 Squad.

The Jets reigned supreme in the International American University (IAU College of Medicine) 5th annual Hoop It Up basketball competition when they mauled BBC 15-10 in an intriguing encounter held in Vieux Fort last Sunday. The victory earned them the winning prize of EC $1,500 and a trophy.

There was never a dull moment during the duel as both teams fought hard for supremacy, displaying some dazzling performances. During the early stages of the game none of the teams really dominated the encounter, until the latter part when The Jets jetted away with the game, despite stubborn resistance from their opponents.

Second place BBC won a prize of $750.00 and a trophy while the third prize went to Maze Sniperz who won $500.00 and a trophy.

Ten teams, which came from various parts of the island, took part in the competition which was part of IAU-COM’s community outreach programme.

During the event spectators also made full use of the opportunity to check their blood pressure and sugar level which was also part of the event. The exercise was conducted by the Student Government Association of IAU.

After the event, at which community spirit overflowed, the players expressed satisfaction in the manner the tournament was held and expressed their willingness to take part in the next tournament.

President of the St. Lucia Basketball Federation, Leslie Collymore lauded the effort of IAU in hosting such a tournament and pledged that his association will continue to support the initiative in whatever way it can.

“The event fits right into what we are trying to achieve so we find it necessary to endorse the event. We are hoping that we can use this event to kick start our plans.” Collymore said.

He added that it has been a long time basketball has not been played in a structured and organized form in St. Lucia.

The St. Lucia Basketball Federation whose mandate is to promote and develop basketball in St. Lucia says the public can expect bigger and better things from it in the future.

This is the first time it has lent its support to the tournament which has grown over the years

President of the Student Government Association (SGA) Cary Bybee said his association is satisfied with the outcome of the event, adding that the public support has been overwhelming.

“The event will be bigger and better next year. Such initiative enables the community to know more about the school and appreciate its existence in the community,” he said.

After the event Public Relations Officer of IAU, Sibi Gopalakrishnan said the school takes much pleasure in reaching out to the community in whatever way possible. He said such an event will go a long way in building a stronger relationship between the school and the community.

He thanked the sponsors of the event for making it a success. “We appreciate the contribution of the sponsors very much. They played a big part in making the event a reality,” he said.

The International American University (IAU College of Medicine) Student Government Association would like to announce the hosting of its 5th Annual Hoop It Up 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament which will be held at the Beanefield Basketball Court in Vieux Fort on Sunday, October 16th, 2011.

The tournament will feature teams consisting of 3 players and a maximum of 2 substitutes. A maximum of 24 teams will be allowed on a first come first serve basis. All registration packets are available at www.iau.edu.lc and www.vieuxforthoops.org to download. The grand prize for the 3- on-3 tournament will be EC$1500. The second prize will be EC$750 and third price will be EC$500. There will also be a 3-Point Competition and a Slam Dunk Competition. The winners for these events will each receive EC$250. This tournament is open to the public and we would welcome all your support and presence to make it successful.

The International American University will also be conducting a FREE Diabetes and Hypertension Screening/Clinic open to the general public for the entire duration of the tournament.

BBC’s Lambert Samuel and Kurt Raphael defeated all teams yesterday to emerge champions of the Dynamic Duo 2-A-Side tournment in Vieux Fort.

9 teams participated in a double-elimination, half-court challenge, With no substitutions and each player having up to 4 fouls in an 11 point or 8 minute contest. Although teams were allowed to register up to three players, only 2 could be listed for a match. Another stipulation of the tournament was the 5 second closely-guarded rule, which was ammended to apply also to the player dribbling the basketball.

It was a great day for outdoor basketball yesterday, with BBC breaking through the winners bracket undefeated to the finals. Their opponents, the Young Warriors Olvin Prescott and Rahim Auguste had a longer journey to the finals, first losing to Maze Sniperz’ Gilian “Bashment” Joseph and Jermain “Tallboy” James. They were then placed in the losers bracket, where it became an intense situation of survival with any defeat leading to elimination.

A notable crew in the tournament were the Young Dolphins from Dennery, which included Windward Islands Team MVP Kevin Mathurin, Erwin Tertullien and Michael Dovius. They were really spectacular with crisp passing and great athleticism but were eliminated by the Young Warriors 10-9 in a thrilling contest.

Because of the Double-elimination format, Young Warriors needed to defeat BBC in two games to become champions. BBC, undefeated so far, needed only one victory to gain the championship. The finals contest was to 15 points with no time limit.

In the first match-up Young Warriors, behind 11-14, cleverly fouled out BBC’s Lambert Samuel to win by default. The next match was keenly contested to 14-14, with the next point crowning a champion. It was riveting competition under bright sunlight and scorching heat, two teams exhausted from 4 hours of intense battles, a fitting scenario to find a Dynamic Duo. BBC’s Kurt Raphael ended the war with a two point dagger from outside the arc, bringing a climactic conclusion to what was a great day of basketball, 16-14.
